Can I take baby food on a plane?

Usually yes — baby food, formula and breast milk have a cabin liquids exemption. Whether the baby must travel with you depends on the item and the checkpoint: at UK airports breast milk doesn't need the baby present, but formula and baby food do.

Does baby food count as a liquid for airport security?

Major checkpoints exempt infant feeds from the normal container limit, with conditions. GOV.UK: breast milk up to 2,000ml per container even without your baby (frozen breast milk not allowed in hand luggage); formula, baby food and sterilised water when travelling with a baby; containers may be opened for screening. Elsewhere, confirm the departure checkpoint's rules. Declare them at the X-ray.

Above the normal liquid limit for the journey, under the checkpoint's conditions. Officers may open or test containers. Bring slightly more than the flight needs in case of delays.

03 · Checked bag

Extra supplies can go in checked baggage; keep what you need for the journey in your cabin bag. Checked baggage doesn't change customs or import rules at your destination.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to taste baby food at security?

Screening varies by checkpoint. Officers may ask you to open a container or screen it separately, and some airports ask for other checks. We haven't verified a universal rule on tasting, so follow the officer's instructions and allow extra time.

Does the baby need to be present?

It depends. GOV.UK says breast milk can travel through UK airports without your baby, while formula, baby food and sterilised water need the baby with you. Other countries set their own rules — confirm with your departure checkpoint.
