Short answer

Security's definition of 'liquid' is broader than a tap. Anything that pours, smears or sprays counts. Here's the practical list.

General guidance

Rule basis: General airport security guidance — rules can vary between airports and change over time. Confirm with your departure airport before you fly.

What to do: Pack to 100ml per container in a single 1-litre clear bag unless you've confirmed a larger allowance at both your departure airports.

Liquid Limits is a travel planning tool, not an official aviation source. Always confirm with the airport before you travel.

Airline

Can this travel in cabin or checked baggage?

Cabin OK

Most airlines defer to airport security on liquids in the cabin.

Border

Can you bring this into the destination country?

Usually OK

Liquids themselves are rarely a customs issue — but contents (alcohol, dairy, CBD) might be.

Three separate rule systems · Any one can stop your item

Liquids (the obvious ones)

Water, juice, soup, alcohol, contact lens solution, syrup, perfume.

Gels

Hair gel, lip gloss, sunscreen, body wash, eye gel, jelly, hummus.

Pastes & spreads

Toothpaste, peanut butter, Nutella, jam, marmalade, hummus, soft cheese (brie, ricotta).

Aerosols

Deodorant, hairspray, dry shampoo, shaving foam — even if they look small.

Mascara, foundation, liquid eyeliner

All count. The container size is what matters, not how full it is.

Special cases

Snow globes (depend on internal volume), candles (soft = gel, hard = solid), water-filled toys, baby items (special exception), medicines (special exception).

Not a liquid

Hard cheese, solid lipstick, solid deodorant stick, dry powder, makeup powder, mints, energy bars.
